The search for Biomarkers

The search for Biomarkers

The objective of this collaborative programme is to study clinical material seeking out novel biomarkers of disease, response to therapy, toxicity and prognosis. The programme will employ analytical biochemistry techniques plus advanced mass spectrometry and informatic approaches in a multidisciplinary systems biology approach to cancer research.

For example, Professor Ian Jacobs and colleagues have been conducting the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) in order to assess the effect of ovarian cancer screening on mortality, as well as the performance of the multimodal and ultrasound screening strategies. This project has collected over 200,000 serum samples offering great opportunities for proteomics research into risk prediction in womens cancers and also other diseases such as lung cancer.
